*new* the shift forward - COACH

The Shift Forward is an enhanced education program that was created following an extensive consultation process with stakeholders in Hockey Canada-sanctioned programs to understand how education and training can better support participants and the key objective of changing unhealthy behaviors in the game.

As of the 2026-2027 season, Hockey Canada and Hockey Alberta officially transitioned to a new safety program: The Shift Forward: Evolving Hockey Culture.

This program completely replaces the former Respect in Sport (RIS) - Activity Leader certification for all coaches, trainers, and team staff. The Shift Forward - Parent course cannot be used to fulfill this requirement. Coaches must complete the version specifically labeled for Coaches/Activity Leaders.

The Shift Forward is a mandatory program under the playing rules and regulations of Hockey Alberta and Hockey Calgary.

Transition Rules

  • Existing Certifications: Currently valid, unexpired Respect in Sport - Activity Leader certificate, Hockey Alberta will recognize this until that RIS expiry date.
  • New & Expired Coaches: New coaches or if previous RIS certification has expired, coaches must complete The Shift Forward - Coach program before being rostered.
  • Other Sports: If a coach has a Respect in Sport - Activity Leader certificate from another sport, it will NOT be honored. Coaches must take The Shift Forward - Coach.
