Awards & Recognition

Each year Southwest Hockey recognizes volunteers who go above and beyond.

Here is a list of some very deserving recipients!  Thank you!!

Hockey Calgary Outstanding Service Award for 2022-2023

Hockey Calgary chose to recognize our own, Christina Bowles and Lisa Santos as the 2022/2023 Outstanding Service recipients!!

The following submission was provided by Jeff Campbell; I’ve had a hard time putting into words what Christina and Lisa mean to Southwest Hockey, and me as President of this association. I have had the honor of working closely with them over the past six years that I have served on the board of Southwest Hockey. They literally embody what it means to be servant leaders and would not hesitate for a second to hire them in my company if it wasn’t a conflict of interest.

I’m not ashamed to say when I first stepped in to my role as president of Southwest, the role was overwhelming to say the least. I think I survived only because of these two amazing women. From day one I noticed immediately how diligent, focused, detail oriented, thoughtful, and tough they were. An asset to any team for sure. Beyond all the regular stuff they do so well, I am continually amazed that they are literally a historical database for seemingly anything and everything that has gone on in Southwest Hockey and Hockey Calgary. They are immaculate record keepers and I am proud to say a big reason why I believe Southwest has some of the best governance and policies in Hockey Calgary today and Christina and Lisa were instrumental in helping us win Association of the Year last year.

The are relentless in follow up and thoughtful in how they look out for Southwest Hockey, our volunteers and the board alike. But more than any of that, they have given so much for all the kids and their families who love the game of hockey, not only in Southwest’s association but Hockey Calgary as a whole. They thrive behind the scenes and make us look good when really it is them who are literally the hands, feet and brains of the entire operation.

Christina and Lisa, you as SO deserving of this recognition. Congratulations and Thank-you for all you do!

Southwest is honored to have be awarded the recognition as the Association of the Year by Hockey Calgary!

"Through the last 7-years, Southwest Hockey has made a positive difference, exemplifying our mission; 'To encourage, promote, coordinate, improve and provide the means to enhance the experience for all those who wish to play, coach or otherwise become involved in the sport of hockey.' We believe this has positively impacted our volunteers, families and all our participants who actively contribute to the betterment of the Association, making the Southwest Hockey Association a very deserving recipient of the Hockey Calgary 2021-2022 Association of the Year Award!"  To read the full recognition -- Click Here

Association Volunteer of the Year

The purpose of this volunteer recognition award is to recognize outstanding commitment and contributions to the game of hockey.

This volunteer does not need to hold a specific role on a team, and rather this individual could be someone "behind the scenes" who puts in countless hours and providing support to all the moving parts of the Association. This person would also represent a positive public image for Southwest.

The recipient of this award is selected by the SW Board of Directors and submitted to Hockey Calgary.

The deserving recipient is recognized at the annual Hockey Calgary Volunteer Gala held each spring.

Joshua Justice Memorial Award

Joshua Justice_Memorial

On December 6, 2014; a tragic accident claimed the life of Joshua (“Josh”) Justice.  Josh was 13 years old, who at the time, was a 1st year Shaw Meadows Bantam player.

Being a fun kid with a great sense of humour, Josh was always a positive influence in and out of the dressing room.  He could be observed in the dressing room making jokes, dancing to music, and including his teammates in the dressing room fun.  One of his best qualities was his genuine care and concern for others, ensuring all were included in the fun especially those who were quiet or shy.  He encouraged all to participate in the dressing room collectiveness.   On the teams Josh played he was kind, supportive, and encouraging to all of his teammates; and was always quick to complement each of them on their game play.

Once Josh ‘hit the ice’ he tried as hard as or harder than anyone else on the ice.  His accomplishments were based on hard work and determination.  While working extremely hard, he continued to encourage his teammates to ensure they were feeling supported and included.

After practice and before Josh left the ice, he would search out each and every Coach that had been on the ice with him, looked them in the eyes, shake their hands and say, “Thank you”. Josh played for all things positive in Sport….Fun, Friendship and Respect for one another.

The Joshua Justice Memorial Award has been established to both recognize the loss of a wonderful young man who had so much promise and never lost sight of what hockey is about and to also celebrate the recipient of this Award; who will be chosen as a player who also plays for Fun, Friendship & Respect to the sport of hockey and their fellow teammates.

With the merger of Shaw Meadows & Southland Hockey in 2015 the new SW board wanted to continue with recognizing Josh's memory.

Nominations are open in February each season. The letters will be reviewed and selected by the SW Board of Directors in conjunction with the family and the deserving recipient is recognized at the Annual General Meeting.

Lloyd Ewenin Memorial Coach of the Year Award

Lloyd Ewenin_Coach Memorial

On November 5, 2018, the Southwest Hockey Association community lost one of its long-time coaches and volunteers, Lloyd Ewenin.

Lloyd coached with Southland and Southwest Hockey Association for many years, and selflessly gave his time, and efforts as a dedicated volunteer.

He shared his knowledge and ability with the players on his teams; with a calmness and enthusiasm that showed his desire to not only teach the players about hockey, but to also guide and support the players so that they could succeed in hockey and to also come away with life skills too.  Lloyd believed that a player was a ‘human being’ first, and a ‘hockey player’ second.

To keep Lloyd's memory alive, the Southwest Hockey Association created the Lloyd Ewenin Memorial Coach of the Year Award in April, 2019.

Every year this award is presented to a SW Coach that exemplifies Lloyd's selfless dedication to his players, passion for the game and an all-round commitment to the game of hockey.  The recipient will receive a keeper plaque and their name added to the Lloyd Ewenin Memorial Coach of the Year plaque that will be kept in the Southwest Hockey trophy cabinet.

Nominations are open in February each season. The letters will be reviewed and selected by the SW Board of Directors and the deserving recipient is recognized at the Annual General Meeting.
