Player Prep Camp

These camps are run by a Southwest Hockey Coaching Team.  As coaches we take pride in being teachers of the game. We use the positive relationships we build with our players to motivate them to achieve to their potential. The goal of our prep camps is to create a fun, fast-paced, skill oriented environment for our players as they shake off the summer dust and begin to prepare for upcoming evaluations. Goalie Prep Camp will be instructed by Derek Purfield:

Derek is entering his 8th year as a Goalie/Video Coach with the Okotoks Oilers Organization. Derek began his coaching career with the Calgary Buffaloes where he spent 6 seasons developing their net minders prior to joining the Swift Current Broncos of the WHL. Derek spent 5 seasons with Swift Current while simultaneously coaching the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (CIS). Derek also consults for Hockey Alberta helping with their regional goaltending development and the Under-16 programs. Derek most recently won a silver medal at the 2017 WHL Cup as goaltending coach of Team Alberta.

Derek’s expertise has allowed him to develop minor hockey goaltenders into Junior, Western Hockey League, NCAA, and Professional net minders.

Goaltender Development at any level comes down to core fundamentals. Goaltender development consists of:

  1.  SKATING: Being a strong skater as a goaltender is vital. Ability to control and use edges will aid in the goaltender’s movement around the crease.
  2.  POSITION-SPECIFIC MOVEMENT: Movement specific to the goaltender (t-pushes, shuffles, butterfly slides, backside pushes, c-cuts forward and backward). These movements are what drives the goaltender to position to execute the save.
  3. POSITIONING: Consists of 3 crucial elements:
    • ANGLE - getting in between the puck and the net.
    • BODY - squareness to the puck.
    • DEPTH - selecting the correct depth from the net given the situation.
  4. SAVE EXECUTION: Now that the goaltender is in position or even if they are not, they must execute a save. This can be a reactive or blocking save.
  5. POST-SAVE: If there is a rebound the goaltender must regain position on the puck and it’s new location. Proper recovery mechanics will get them into this new position.
